Here goes nothing.

After constructing and performing a deliberative piece over a certain piece of legislation, I feel that I can comment on numerous intricacies that go along with the entire process of constructing a policy speech. Writing a persuasive speech is most definitely far different from writing prose like a persuasive essay. In my opinion, it takes much more eloquent wording and clear oral messages that are very apparent to the listener(s). There are many tactics and different devices of rhetoric that are very important to be aware of when constructing a policy speech. Every single word counts.

A first step in constructing a policy speech that our group implemented is a social judgment theory map. As you can see, Kyle also believes in the social judgment theory. Before you are going to take a stance on a specific topic, it is important to see all possible positions on the spectrum of a selected issue. The audience to which you are planning on delivering the speech to must be considered in great detail. Where do they stand on this specific issue? Obviously not everyone feels the same exact way about it, so what are the different positions and how greatly do they vary from each other? The speaker must choose a stance on a specific topic that will please everyone. He must seemingly remain neutral to the audience. The speaker does not want to alienate anyone in the audience if at all possible.

After carefully selecting a position on a specific topic, then a speaker can start to actually construct the text of the speech. It is important to keep in mind the rhetorical figures that have been used for centuries that are offered at Silva Rhetoricae. These are rhetorical devices that are very effective in a policy speech. For the type of policy speech that we did, a very personal touch is important to make your audience feel included and special in the speech. The personal touch is very important to establish rapport with the audience as a speaker. I think that the speaker should definitely begin their speech light-heartedly and enthusiastically to draw in the audience write at the beginning.

I think something that I would advise a person writing a policy of a speech is to pay careful attention to the sound of each line that you write. We are not used to writing pieces that are solely for the purpose of being read aloud. Even though a line might look awkward on paper, it could sound smooth as butter when you say it aloud. It is very important to choose words and phrases that are pleasing to the ear. At some points, however, cacophonous sounding words or phrases may be strategically placed to make a point or a strong assertion. I think also that ideas and phrases can be repeated as Allison speaks of on her analysis of constructing a policy speech. An audience member will subconsciously lock on to certain ideas that are repeated. You want to make sure these are the most important points of your deliberative speech. They should sound eloquent and flawless.

These are only a few of the many tactics that I have learned to use in constructing this particular type of speech. There are so many ways that you can use language in a strategic way to help make a deliberative speech great. It really has been fun to look more closely at the sounds of language rather than just the literal meaning. This is definitely a very important piece of public speaking. For some more helpful hints in rhetorical strategies check out American rhetoric.

I also want to thank Dave for a great semester. I really have learned a lot about rhetoric and such. Good luck with everything in the future.

So I decided not to give my speech again today. I am trying to cut down on the content. It was way too long the first time that I went. It was almost 6 and a half minutes, so I definitely need to figure something out. It is really hard to decide what I should keep or not. We will see how it goes tomorrow I guess if I decide to redo it.

I have to say that the party that Jordan is talking about sounds pretty sweet. Everyone will need a little release. Plus no one has class on tuesday. Gotta take advantage of the last week of college before I head home for the summer. On that note, I am out.

Not too much to say today. I have been really busy with everything. Man do I have a lot to do in the next week. Insanity. So, I think that my speech went pretty well today. Other than some minor stumbles, I think overall it went smoothly. I was happy with the way that our speech turned out. I just cant wait to laugh at myself when I see myself on camera. haha. It is always an embarassing situation to see myself like that. I dont know if that is just me or if it is like that for everyone. Hopefully I will not have to redo the speech and I can just focus on finishing my last blog posting for the semester. I hope everyone has a great thursday.

Is anyone else playing IM softball? My team has only actually played one game and we have been scheduled to play like 5. We went down today because we were supposed to have our first playoff game but it turned out that they moved back the games to thursday without notifying us. It will be difficult now to even finish the tournament before school is over. Its been really shitty. Oh well.

I cant believe how crazy these last two weeks are for everyone. It is really crazy. I mean people are up all night doing work and running around from the libarary to group meetings to various other things they have to do. Everyone is just a little on edge and super stressed out. Not to mention that everyone is just ready to be done and have some time away from school. It is really a frantic time in the life of a college student.

I just have to mention that Ivan's story is absolutely hilarious. I could definitely see that being a... um... eye-opening experience. Maybe since, I will be living in crawford as a JUNIOR next year, i will have the privilege of experiencing some awkward situation like this in the community bathroom. Well I just got done with another long Wednesday and I am so glad that it is over with. Cant wait for school to be out. I am just getting really anxious to be home and make some money and not have to go to class everyday. Plus I am excited to go to Chile. It should be great.

I think that my speech went pretty well today. Although my stuffy nose made it quite difficult to annunciate my words. haha. It all sounded like a nasally mess to me. I just need to read it over more and get accustomed with the text. That should help alot. Well check out my fellow group member, Jordan and his blog. I think I have been out of the loop because my newsfeeds are not working for some reason. I haven't been able to read anyone's blogs so I am really not into the new topics or anything. So I guess I will just wing it and see what comes.

I think the speeches went rather well today considering it ws just the first run through of it. Everyone seemed like they worked hard on the language and construction of their speeches. I think that I will have to read through mine a few more times before I feel more comfortable with it after watching some other speeches today.

In other news, I am so excited about playing IM softball. We had our first game yesterday and have another game tomorrow. It is just fun to get out there and be active. Not that I am not already, but I missed baseball a bit. I haven't played since highschool. I hope that we will do well. Yeah well I guess thats about all for today. Hope everyone is hangin in there.

Well I havent been very good about my blogging lately. Sorry. Things have been really hectic as I am sure they are with everyone else. I always get frustrated with the last three weeks of school because it seems like there is so much jammed into the very end of the semester. So it always ends up being crazy running around trying to finish up projects and everything else that you need to do. It sounds like Kristin is feeling the same way. Anyways...

So the weather is very beautiful today (sarcastic). I cant believe that it is still this cold and shit. Back in Phoenix, April is already like summer. It is almost 100 degrees some days. I am really not used to these really long winters. It is crazy. You really take having the sun out for granted living in AZ. It really makes everything so much better and your days so much easier when it is a beautiful day. Wierd how that works out.

I still am sitting here in disbelief over this new concealed weapon law that Ohio just passed. It is ridiculous. I cant believe some of the logic that people use to justify it. People say that criminals will be less likely to commit a crime because they won't know who might be carrying a weapon. That is the most ass backwards, dumbass statement i have heard. It just doesnt make any sense. Only in Ohio I guess. What does everyone else think about this? Well, thats all for now. I am out.

Well I am not going to be able to link to anyone's blogs today because for some reason for the past week none of my newsfeeds seem to be working. I have not been able to look at anyone's blogs. I really don't know what is going on. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas of what is going on. I guess just post it on your blog and I will have to go through the internet to check them out. Does anyone else have this problem? I have Newzcrawler.

Well onto other things. So I found out that one of my good friends from back home is having some major problems right now. I feel so bad for him. He tore his ACL about 8 months ago had surgery and everything. Then he just tore it again about 2 weeks ago at rugby practice. He had surgery again on Wednesday and is now recovering. Thursday, he is sitting on the couch when his mom starts have seizures. She already has lung cancer and has had both kidneys removed. They take her to the hospital and find that the cancer has spread and she now has a tumor in her brain. I can't even believe that. I cannot imagine what he is going through right now. I called him last night and let him know that he was in my thoughts and prayers. What a crazy world. I hope everyone had a great spring break. Mine was a lot of fun. I just went home to Phoenix, AZ. But then my buddy and I decided to go out to my cabin in Colorado and my girlfriend that goes to Colorado State came down to stay with me for the week. It was great to see her. I only get to see her about once every 2 months or so. It is rough. She is amazing. We did some fishing, hiking, and a lot of lounging around. It was really nice to have nothing to do everyday. I could just wake up and do whatever I felt like doing. Very nice. The weather up there was absolutely beautiful. I was worried that it would be cold, but while we were there it was 75 everyday and sunny. So I was getting a tan while I was fishing. It was great. Plus a lot of my family lives in Colorado Springs so I got to see all of them. Overall it was a great trip. It was actually HOT while I was in Phoenix. What a novel idea. I went from the 90 degree Arizona sun to this shitty ass weather here in Ohio. Go figure. All and all I had a great spring break. Now just looking forward to the summer. Just getting by. I gotta go get some work done. I'm out.

Not much to say tonight really. So tonight I propose an additional $23 million for schools that want to use drug testing as a tool to save children's lives. The aim here is not to punish children, but to send them this message: We love you, and we don't want to lose you.

Antenantiosis- no examples

Compensatio- We have come through recession, and terrorist attack, and corporate scandals, and the uncertainties of war. And because you acted to stimulate our economy with tax relief, this economy is strong, and growing stronger.

Complexio- My fellow citizens, we now move forward, with confidence and faith. Our nation is strong and steadfast. The cause we serve is right, because it is the cause of all mankind. The momentum of freedom in our world is unmistakable, and it is not carried forward by our power alone.

Compisitum ex contrariis- By bringing hope to the oppressed, and delivering justice to the violent, they are making America more secure.

Euphemismus- no examples

Eustathia- Our greatest responsibility is the active defense of the American people. Twenty-eight months have passed since Sept. 11, 2001, over two years without an attack on American soil, and it is tempting to believe that the danger is behind us. That hope is understandable, comforting, and false. The killing has continued in Bali, Jakarta, Casablanca, Riyadh, Mombassa, Jerusalem, Istanbul, and Baghdad. The terrorists continue to plot against America and the civilized world. And by our will and courage, this danger will be defeated.

Eutrepismus- no examples

Paroemion- no examples

Paromoiosis- no examples

Paromologia- no examples

Syncope- no examples

Syncrysis- These killers, joined by foreign terrorists, are a serious, continuing danger. Something that I found extrememely interesting is that the census bureau predicts that in the year 2008, the US will have 5 million more jobs than workers. Thus, there will be an extreme shortage in the labor force. Everyone is always worried about people immigrating and taking american jobs away from americans; however, this statistic makes it seem that we are going to need more and more immigrant workers in the future in order to fuel our economy. One reason that the bureau sites for this shortage is the fact that the baby boom generation is starting to retire now. This will create a huge loss in the american work force and open up numerous jobs. After reading these stats, I am becoming more and more for the guest worker program that Bush has proposed. It seems like we need all of these immigrant workers more than anyone really knows.

I would just like to say congrats to Scott and all the other people who acted in the musical, I heard it was great. Also congrats to the women's tennis team for a great job this weekend. And also to the baseball team. And of course to the track team where the women won the conference championship again this year. Congrats to all.

I must say it was very nice being able to sleep in again this morning. Very funny. I won't bore anyone with any stories as I am sure everyone has their own. I will say though that my roommate Brian had an interesting night on Saturday. If anyone sees him around campus ask him about the huge strawberry on the side of his face. ha. Anyways, I just have to say that I think that Fatima will have a great time in Arizona. Being from there, I too am heading out to sunny AZ. I can't wait to be in the warm weather. It will be fun to be home in Phoenix and see my fam in stuff. I am looking forward to vegging out for a week and having nothing to do. I can't wait. School is really getting to me right now. I am having some major motivation issues. The laziness is overtaking me. Plus I am having those crazy ass email issues. Today I got an email that said the school was going to shut down my email account !!! I think even that one is part of the virus. Cause I have never seen anything sent from management@ denison. There is no such thing. Well anyways, see everyone tomorrow in class. I got to sleep in and have absolutely nothing to do. It is very nice. I think that people should take more advantage more often. I also have to say that the Georgetown equivalent of the Bullsheet that Gilby posted on his blog was absolutely hilarious. I was dying reading the entries aloud to all of my roommates who subsequently were rolling on the floor screaming with laughter. It is good to see that these students are definitely taking advantage of their freedom of press and definitely not holding anything back.

I hope everyone has a great weekend and I hope that my fellow 2nd floor shep hall resident <A HREF:"http://aml401.blogspot.com/2004_02_01_aml401_archive.html#107777256134756186">Allison is feeling much better. :-)

I just have to say that I strongly disagree with Bush's proposal to make a constitutional ammendment to ban gay marriages. It is so wrong. It is just his own personal fundamentalist christian beliefs coming out. And that definitely shouldn't have any effect on our country's constitution. In my opinion, our government says there is a separation of church and state, but in reality, it is impossible to really separate the two. There are a set of beliefs that people live by everyday. Most of the time, religion plays a big part in shaping these people's beliefs. Like what they think is right or wrong, moral or immoral. There is no clean cut way to completely split church and the state apart. I don't have any specific solution to this problem, but it seems to me that it needs to be acknowledged by people so that they can understand the true dynamics of people's ideologies. Wow, got a little political there. What do you know. ha.

Anyways, check out Matt's blog since I haven't linked to him before. We watched the season finale of My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiance. It was great. I think the whole concept for the show is pure comedy. I don't see how you can't see the humor in it. I enjoyed watching the chaos that ensued every week as more and more twists were thrown into the show. In the end, the show ends up having a very strong message of the love shared by a family and the strong bonds they had. I really liked how they ended the show. I thought it was very good. The show ended up a big success I think.

Another huge fascination in our room has been Average Joe. It is just a great show, and I amaze myself every episode at how caught up in the show I get. I always have the guys I am rooting for and the guys that I just can't stand. Amazing how tv can do that to you. Everyone should definitely tune in next week to see the saga that is Average Joe. The bar party on saturday night was a great time. It is amazing how I didnt have a valentine or anything and it really didnt matter. I had a great weekend anyways. And I must say that i didnt see Dave's bowling shoes this morning as Ethan pointed out in His Blog. It never fails. I can't get by without getting sick if anoyone else is. It would seem that i should be healthy and stuff, but I guess it is just not that simple. Can I just say that I have been kinda confused with all of these rhetorical figure definitions. I mean sometimes there are words that mean the same thing or have like three different words that mean the same thing. Also, sometimes the definitions are very vague and have no examples. It is hard to understand speaking elements that haven't really been used in contemporary context. Well, I guess we will find out how well my analysis turned out tomorrow.

I think that it is extremely interesting to look at some of the words that we frequently use today and delve into their meanings. I never really thought about how much people use words like slut and faggot now a days. I think there are many reasons for this and there are very complex stories behind why each person says different things. I think that there are some historical events and concepts that have been incorporated in our country that have added to the meaning of these words and how they are perceived in various contexts.

Well, I will see everyone in class tomorrow. It is brutal having class all day and then lifting afterwards. It is a very exhausting day. Anyways, I enjoyed the class discussion that we had today. It was very interesting to listen to different people's interpretations of the whole Janet Jackson incident. It is interesting how much more comfortable with sexuality our generation is than other people. That could just be a stupid generalization, but I noticed that we are a lot more comfortable talking about stuff having to do with sexuality. I think that really the only reason people are not comfortable talking about sexual things is because of the way that they were brought up. It just depends how people have been taught to view sex. Well anyways, I am going to get to bed. I promise a more interesting post tomorrow. I guess I need to get much more interesting cause I don't think anyone is wanting to link to my blog. Sorry. Well here check out Andrea's Blog and her pics of Chile. It looks really sweet.

So it is so great that it is friday and I am looking forward to being able to hang out. Unfortunately, I have to host a recruit tonight for football. Then tomorrow I have to get up early to work at the indoor track meet all day. So I was very intrigued by Professor Gilbert's online dating story today in class. I think it is hilarious. I wonder if many other people who use these services have the same type of experiences. I also found it funny that Dr. Gilbert commented on how lucky we are to have the opportunity to meet so many people here in college. It is very true. I mean we are in the prime of our lives and the hormones are raging. Everyone is looking to meet new people and experience new things. I just wish I could say I was experiencing some of these new people. haha. Well anyways, have a great weekend everyone. Hopefully I will see you out and about.

So here is the personal ad that I decided to critique: "http://personals.nerve.com/profile.aspx?readcache=3PUHQ77YJIT7L&scid=0&pos=3&tabid=1". Well as you can see it seems that unrefinedsugar seems to be still stuck in her childhood. She is very honest about herself though which I can respect when she says that she resembles a cartoon character rather than trying to flatter herself by comparing herself to a very good-looking celebrity. She is very short in all of her answers. Although short, they are not necessarily to the point. I really didn't learn anything about her by reading all of her answers to these questions. Maybe she is trying to be vague so as not to alienate any people that might be looking at her ad. She wants to keep her interest group broad it seems. I don't know how many people would respond very well to her response to the why should you get to know me question. She says "Becuase I said so ;)". To me that gives me no real reason to want to every meet her or see who she really is. It gives no insight to her personality or to they type of person that she is. It makes her seem very boring and just another female in the masses. With her response in what she is looking for I think she definitely is eliminating by talking about spiritual issues like "Yang". One can see that she is very spiritual and is looking for someone who appreciates that and assigns the same kind of meaning to life as she does. Also by saying that she is looking for the person who will "help her find the best version of herself" she makes herself seems very dependent. She seems like she has had trouble defining herself as an individual. At the same time it is somewhat of a cliche that she is like looking for that person to complete herself. Who isn't? Overall I think that this woman really gives no appreciable reason for anyone to pick her out of the thousands of profiles with her short and vague answers. I really got no insight into who she is. I don't think she is very serious about finding her life-long partner through this online dating service.

So I am just getting ready to go to bed. I can't believe how tired I am all the time. I feel like we have been here at school for like 3 months. But then I realize that it is only 3 weeks. haha. I am really enjoying public speaking though. I think it is funny to analyze some of those online dating ads. It makes me really wonder what the hell I would write about myself if I was to make one of my own. I would probably sound like one of the thousand other desperate guys trying to get a date. Well, on that note it is time for bed.
